Tarayana Micro-Finance

Tarayana Microfinance (TMF) is the microfinance initiative of Tarayana Foundation a Civil Society Organization founded by Her Majesty The Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. Tarayana Foundation views microfinance as a powerful tool and an essential next step for beneficiaries who have just progressed out of subsistence poverty.

Tarayana Foundation introduced microfinance services in 2008 and operated a variety of livelihood development projects with microcredit component until 2013, benefiting 210 individuals and 10 loan groups. Tarayana Foundation became a leading expert in livelihood development in rural communities.

Tarayana Foundation obtained a license for non-deposit taking microfinance institutions from the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan in 2018, and TMF is now operating in three Dzongkhags, gradually expanding its reach throughout Bhutan. The combination of financing by TMF and livelihood development delivered by experienced Tarayana Foundation field officers provides a unique public benefit to the rural communities of Bhutan.

TMF values impact over financial gains. TMF prioritizes poor & transient poor segments, and supports rural SMEs by connecting them with relevant government entities, banks, and investors. TMF focuses on unlocking the beneficiaries’ potential to help themselves and guide them to build a sustainable foundation of income.

We at TMF for Rural Development hope to contribute in a small way towards fulfilling His Majesty The King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck’s vision of financial inclusion for all.
